Around Laverton is a monthly community newspaper. We publish 10 (ten) issues a year – from March to December – and deliver the paper free of charge to the people in our local community.
The paper is run completely by volunteers – from our writers through to our layout people. Volunteers even distribute it every month to homes and shops in the area.
Advertising, promotion, arranging printing and delivery of the paper each month, plus other administrative roles, are all carried out by volunteers.
We have 14 writers, 5 committee members, 55 deliverers, and 5 bulk deliverers. Some of these people do two or three of these jobs. Contributors include our local solicitor, vet, computer business, and sporting and community groups in the area.
We started Around Laverton in 1979, when Laverton was a divided country town.
Our aim was to try and connect the town. At that time, RAAF families occupied about half of Laverton’s homes, and the freeway and the railway divided the town itself.
We provided a much-needed service, because the local paper at the time was only delivered sometimes, and the stories were only about Werribee.
